Infant hiccups: what parents should know

Short answer
Infant hiccups are usually brief diaphragm spasms linked with feeding or swallowed air, but persistent distress deserves a clinician's advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why hiccups happen
A baby's developing feeding pattern can make the diaphragm contract suddenly after a large feed, fast feeding, crying, or swallowed air. Hiccups may occur during or after feeds and often stop without treatment. If they come with frequent spit-up, back-arching, coughing, feeding refusal, or poor weight gain, reflux may be contributing. Gastritis is less typical in an infant and needs assessment rather than assumption from hiccups alone.
Comfort measures
Pause the feed, hold the infant upright, and allow time for a gentle burp. Resume feeding when the infant is settled, using the usual safe feeding position. Smaller, calmer feeds may reduce swallowed air; follow the feeding plan given by your clinician. Do not frighten the infant, pull the tongue, offer water, or use herbs or medicines without professional advice. Keep a note of timing, feeds, spit-up, and what stops the episode.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if hiccups repeatedly interrupt feeds or sleep, occur with persistent vomiting, choking, breathing changes, fever, a swollen abdomen, or poor wet nappies. Seek urgent help if the infant turns blue, struggles to breathe, becomes unusually floppy, or cannot keep feeds down. A clinician can look for reflux or another cause and decide whether any treatment is needed.
Questions for your doctor
Could feeding technique or reflux be contributing? Are the spit-up and wet-nappy pattern reassuring? What symptoms would make you want to review the infant quickly?

Questions people ask
Should parents stop every feed when hiccups start?
Pause and settle the infant; resume when comfortable unless feeding repeatedly causes distress.
Can infant hiccups be related to reflux?
They can occur alongside reflux, especially with spit-up or feeding discomfort, but a clinician should assess the pattern.
