Infant heat rash treatment: what parents should know

Heat Rash develops when sweat ducts become blocked, producing fine red or clear bumps in warm, covered areas such as the neck, upper chest, back or nappy line. Skin redness and Skin Bumps may be uncomfortable, but a similar-looking Skin Rash can have another cause. Heat rash is not a sign that a baby has overheated dangerously by itself; the child’s overall condition matters.

Move your baby to a cooler room, remove extra layers, and choose loose, breathable clothing. Keep folds dry and offer a lukewarm bath before patting the skin dry. Avoid oily ointments, perfumed products and vigorous rubbing because they can trap heat or irritate the surface. Do not apply Topical Corticosteroids unless a clinician has recommended a specific product and instructions. Emollient Therapy may be unsuitable for a fresh, sweaty heat rash unless advised.

Contact a clinician if the rash is painful, pus-filled, blistered, spreading, or not improving after cooling and gentle care. Seek urgent help if your infant is hot to touch and difficult to wake, is breathing abnormally, is not feeding, or has markedly fewer wet nappies. These signs can indicate illness beyond a simple heat rash.
