Infant fungal diaper rash: what parents should know

A fungal rash can be a bright red, sore-looking area in the nappy region, sometimes involving skin folds and showing small spots just beyond the main rash. Irritation from moisture, stool, urine or rubbing can look similar, so a parent cannot confirm the cause from appearance alone. A rash that follows recent antibiotic use or does not improve with barrier care may need assessment for Skin Yeast Infection.

Change nappies promptly and rinse with lukewarm water or use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry, allow short periods without a nappy when practical, and apply a protective barrier recommended for your baby. Wash hands before and after changes, and avoid talcum powder, scented wipes and scrubbing.

Seek medical advice if the rash involves folds, is worsening, has blisters, open skin, pus or crusting, or does not settle with careful care. Arrange prompt review if your baby has fever, seems unusually sleepy, feeds poorly, or appears in significant pain. Urgent help is needed for a rapidly spreading rash with a very unwell infant.
