Induction after your waters break

Breaking of the waters can happen before contractions, during labour, or before the expected time of birth. Your maternity team first confirms that the fluid is amniotic fluid and checks your temperature, your symptoms, the baby’s heart rate, and the fluid’s appearance. These findings help decide whether waiting with monitoring or starting labour is appropriate.

Phone your maternity unit as soon as you notice a gush or ongoing trickle. Record the time it began and use a clean pad to observe the fluid. Do not use tampons or put anything in the vagina unless your clinician specifically instructs you. Keep track of contractions and baby movements, and follow advice about coming to hospital.

The team will discuss the reason for any proposed induction, the examination and monitoring involved, possible discomfort, pain relief, and how the plan may change if labour progresses slowly or a concern develops. You can ask for the explanation in plain language before consenting.

Get urgent maternity advice if you develop a fever, chills, worsening illness, unpleasant-smelling fluid, green or brown fluid, vaginal bleeding, severe pain, or noticeably fewer baby movements. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, collapse, serious breathing problems, or a cord or body part at the vaginal opening; lie down and follow the emergency operator’s instructions.

Ask how the waters were confirmed, whether there are signs of infection, what waiting would involve, why induction is being proposed, how the baby will be monitored, and what you should do if contractions do not start. Clarify whom to call overnight and which symptoms mean you should return immediately.
