Inducing labour after a membrane sweep

During a membrane sweep, a clinician separates the membranes around the cervix using an examination. This can release local hormones and may cause period-like cramps, irregular contractions, or light spotting. Some people notice no change. A sweep does not involve breaking the waters or giving an induction medicine.

Induction of labour uses methods chosen by the maternity team to encourage labour when there is a clinical reason or when pregnancy has continued beyond the planned point. Options can include cervical preparation, medicines, or breaking the waters. The method depends on the cervix, fetal position, previous births or uterine surgery, and your health and the baby's wellbeing.

Rest if you need to, drink fluids, and use only pain relief approved by your maternity team. Observe whether contractions become longer, stronger, and closer together, and note any bleeding or fluid loss. Keep your induction appointment if one has been arranged; a sweep does not replace that plan unless your maternity team changes it.

Ask what number to call, when to come in, and whether a repeat sweep is suitable. If the sweep was difficult or you have had a previous caesarean, make sure the team knows your full birth history before any induction method is chosen.

Call your maternity unit for heavy bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, fever, or concerns about fetal movement. Seek urgent assessment for severe abdominal pain, a gush of fluid with an unusual colour or smell, or reduced fetal movement. Follow your unit's instructions if your waters break or labour begins.

Ask what the sweep showed about your cervix, how long to wait before calling, what induction method would be considered next, how fetal monitoring works, and whether any previous uterine surgery changes the plan.
