Indigestion and sharp pain: what to know

Indigestion often causes burning, pressure, early fullness, belching, or discomfort in the upper abdomen. A sharp sensation can occur when acid irritates the stomach or food pipe. Acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or a peptic ulcer can present with indigestion symptoms; gallstones may cause pain higher on the right side, especially after eating. Helicobacter pylori infection is another possible contributor to recurring upper-abdominal symptoms. The symptom pattern does not identify one condition by itself.

Eat slowly and choose smaller meals while symptoms settle. Notice whether fatty foods, spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, or lying down soon after eating make the discomfort worse. Avoid smoking and do not take anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a clinician has advised that they are suitable for you. A pharmacist can explain whether an antacid or acid reflux medication fits your symptoms and other medicines. Keep a brief record of timing, location, food triggers, vomiting, and bowel changes.

Seek emergency help for severe or worsening pain, chest pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, or black stools. Arrange prompt medical assessment if pain keeps returning, wakes you, comes with persistent vomiting, difficulty swallowing, fever, yellowing of the skin, or unplanned weight loss. A clinician may examine your abdomen and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.

Ask what the pain location and timing suggest, whether your medicines could irritate the stomach, and whether testing for Helicobacter pylori or an ulcer is appropriate. Ask how long to try any recommended treatment and which warning symptoms should change your plan.
