What should you know about indigestion remedies?

Short answer

Indigestion remedies may ease burning, fullness, bloating, or discomfort by reducing stomach acid or helping you avoid triggers, but persistent or severe symptoms need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, can happen after eating and may feel like upper-abdominal discomfort, early fullness, belching, or nausea. The most suitable remedy depends on the symptom pattern, other medicines, pregnancy, and possible underlying causes.

What indigestion remedies do

Some products neutralise acid for short-term relief. Other medicines reduce acid production and may be used when symptoms recur, while products that form a protective barrier can help when acid rises into the food pipe. Read the label and follow the stated dose; do not combine products with similar ingredients unless a pharmacist advises you to.

Indigestion can overlap with acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, Helicobacter pylori infection, or a peptic ulcer. Gallstones can also cause upper-abdominal pain, particularly after meals. These conditions need different evaluation or treatment, so repeatedly treating symptoms without checking the cause may delay appropriate care.

What you can try

Eat smaller meals, slow down while eating, and notice whether fatty, spicy, acidic, or heavily caffeinated foods trigger symptoms. Avoid lying down soon after a meal, and consider raising the head of the bed if symptoms are worse at night. Limiting alcohol and stopping smoking can also reduce irritation and reflux.

A pharmacist can help you choose an antacid, an alginate barrier, or an acid-reducing medicine based on your symptoms and health history. Ask before using a remedy if you take regular medicines, have kidney or liver disease, are pregnant, or need treatment for a child. Some antacids can affect how other medicines are absorbed, so spacing doses may be necessary.

If symptoms keep returning, arrange a clinician review rather than continuing self-treatment indefinitely. The clinician may ask about meal timing, pain location, swallowing, weight change, bowel symptoms, and medicines such as anti-inflammatory painkillers.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Get prompt assessment for vomiting blood, black stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or difficulty or pain when swallowing.

Make a routine appointment if indigestion is new and persistent, returns frequently, interferes with sleep or eating, or occurs with unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, anaemia, or ongoing vomiting. A clinician can decide whether testing or a different treatment is needed.

Questions to ask your doctor

Ask: Could another condition explain these symptoms? Which remedy suits my pattern and other medicines? How long should I try it? Do I need testing for reflux, an ulcer, or Helicobacter pylori? What changes should make me seek urgent help?
