Short answer

Indigestion pain in pregnancy is often linked to reflux and pressure on the stomach, but severe, persistent, or unusual pain needs assessment by your maternity team.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common trigger
Reflux and stomach pressure can increase during pregnancy.
Before medicine
Check with a maternity clinician or pharmacist.
Urgent warning
Severe upper-abdominal pain with visual changes needs prompt care.

Why pregnancy can trigger pain

Pregnancy hormones can relax the valve above the stomach, allowing acid to move upward. As pregnancy progresses, pressure from the growing uterus can make fullness, burning, and discomfort after meals more noticeable. Acid Reflux may therefore present with indigestion pain, but Gastritis, a Peptic Ulcer, Gallstones, or other problems can cause similar symptoms. Pain high in the abdomen should be described precisely rather than labelled as indigestion automatically.

Comfort measures to try

Eat smaller portions, avoid rushing meals, and stay upright after eating. Leave time between your evening meal and lying down, and identify foods that trigger burning, sour taste, or bloating. Ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist before taking antacids, acid reducers, painkillers, or herbal products. Keep prenatal vitamins and other medicines on your medication list so a professional can check timing and interactions. Do not discontinue prescribed treatment independently.

Know when pain needs urgent help

Contact your maternity team promptly for pain that is severe, constant, worsening, or not eased by rest and simple measures. Seek emergency care for chest pressure, difficulty breathing, faintness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, or reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy. These signs need attention regardless of whether heartburn is also present.

Questions for your maternity clinician

Ask which treatment suits your stage of pregnancy, how long to try it, and what symptoms should trigger a call. Mention previous Hiatus Hernia, Helicobacter Pylori Infection, ulcer disease, regular medicines, and any pain below the ribs. You can review Indigestion and Acid Reflux Medication before the visit, but use the appointment to make a personalised plan.
