A clinician may consider a stronger or longer course of acid reduction when reflux-type symptoms persist, or another plan when the pattern suggests gastritis, a peptic ulcer, a hiatus hernia, gallstones or Helicobacter pylori infection. Treatment can involve addressing the cause as well as easing discomfort. The choice depends on your symptoms, examination, medicines, allergies, pregnancy status and conditions such as kidney or liver disease.

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, including products bought without a prescription. Note meal triggers, night symptoms, swallowing changes, vomiting and how often relief is needed. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and do not share it. If treatment does not help, contact the prescriber rather than adding several products independently; the diagnosis or plan may need reconsideration.

Get emergency help for chest pressure, trouble breathing, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, severe abdominal pain or repeated vomiting. Seek prompt medical review for difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, or indigestion that keeps returning despite treatment.

Ask what the medicine is intended to treat, when improvement should be reviewed, which side effects need attention, and whether you need testing for an underlying condition.
