What is the medical term for indigestion?

Dyspepsia is a symptom description, not a single disease. Someone may feel full sooner than expected, have uncomfortable fullness after a meal, or notice pain or burning in the upper abdomen. Reflux, gastritis, a peptic ulcer, Helicobacter pylori infection, a hiatus hernia and gallstones are among the conditions a clinician may consider. Some people have ongoing symptoms without one clear structural cause. The term therefore records the pattern without claiming a specific diagnosis.

Tell a clinician when the symptoms began, where they occur, what you eat or drink beforehand, and whether medicines affect them. Mention nausea, vomiting, swallowing difficulty, bowel changes and any unintentional weight change. Eating slowly, choosing smaller portions and staying upright after meals may reduce discomfort for some people. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Get urgent help for chest pressure, breathing difficulty, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, severe abdominal pain or dehydration. Book a medical review when dyspepsia persists, repeatedly returns, interrupts sleep, or comes with difficulty swallowing, ongoing vomiting, anaemia symptoms or unexplained weight loss.
