The short answer
Indigestion felt in the throat may reflect stomach acid reaching the food pipe, but persistent or severe symptoms need assessment. You may notice burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, burping, hoarseness, cough, or a feeling that food is coming back up. These symptoms can overlap with other conditions, so location alone cannot identify the cause.
What throat indigestion can mean
Acid reflux can irritate the lining of the food pipe and sometimes the throat, particularly after a large meal or when lying down. A hiatus hernia may make reflux easier by allowing part of the stomach to move through the diaphragm. Stomach irritation, an ulcer, or gallbladder problems can also cause upper-abdominal discomfort described as indigestion. A sore throat, trouble swallowing, or voice change that continues should be assessed rather than assumed to be reflux.
What you can do
Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating. Notice whether fatty foods, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, or late meals trigger symptoms, then reduce the specific triggers that affect you. Avoid smoking and ask a pharmacist whether an antacid or other suitable option is appropriate with your medicines and health conditions. If symptoms keep returning, arrange a clinician review; treatment may include an evaluation for reflux and discussion of Acid Reflux Medication.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Arrange prompt medical care for vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, unintentional weight loss, worsening pain, or food sticking when you swallow. A clinician should review symptoms that persist, recur frequently, or disturb sleep.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be reflux, gastritis, an ulcer, or another cause? Do I need testing for Helicobacter Pylori Infection? Which medicines could worsen my symptoms, and what treatment is suitable for me?

Questions people ask
Can indigestion cause a throat cough?
Reflux reaching the upper food pipe or throat can irritate it and contribute to coughing, but ongoing cough has other possible causes.
Should I lie down after eating?
Staying upright after meals may reduce backflow; symptoms that continue despite this need clinical advice.
