Short answer

Indigestion and heartburn can overlap, especially when stomach acid irritates the food pipe, but chest symptoms should never be dismissed automatically.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Heartburn location
Usually a burning feeling behind the breastbone
Helpful position
Stay upright after meals and note whether symptoms improve
Emergency signs
Chest pressure, spreading pain, breathlessness, sweating, or faintness

How indigestion and heartburn differ

Indigestion usually describes discomfort, fullness, bloating, belching, nausea, or burning in the upper abdomen. Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone when stomach contents move upward. Acid Reflux can cause both patterns, often after a meal, when bending, or when lying down. Gastritis, an ulcer, gallstones, Helicobacter Pylori Infection, and a hiatus hernia can produce similar upper-body symptoms, so the combination does not establish a diagnosis.

Record whether the sensation is in the chest or upper abdomen, how long it lasts, what brings it on, and whether it improves when upright. This detail is particularly useful because heart-related pain can resemble indigestion.

What may help

Eat smaller meals and avoid lying down soon after eating. Reduce foods, alcohol, or drinks that reliably trigger burning, and raise the head of your sleeping position if night symptoms occur. Stop smoking if you smoke. Check with a pharmacist before using an antacid or Acid Reflux Medication, especially if you take other medicines or have kidney, heart, or pregnancy-related concerns.

If symptoms recur often, disturb sleep, or require repeated remedies, arrange a clinical review. Treatment depends on the pattern and underlying cause rather than the word used to describe it.

When chest symptoms need urgent help

Call emergency services for chest pressure or tightness, pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder, breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or sudden nausea with chest discomfort. Seek prompt advice for trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or worsening pain. Do not assume a new or severe chest sensation is reflux without assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, how heart-related pain is excluded, and whether medicines or a stomach condition could be contributing. Ask which treatment is suitable, how long to try it, and which changes should prompt urgent care.

Questions people ask

Are indigestion and heartburn the same?

They overlap but are not identical: indigestion is a group of upper-abdominal symptoms, while heartburn is burning behind the breastbone from upward-moving stomach contents.

Can heartburn feel like chest pain?

Yes, but new, severe, or pressure-like chest pain must be treated as potentially serious until assessed.
