Indigestion and a gurgling stomach: what to know

Gurgling or rumbling sounds are produced as the stomach and intestines move food, liquid, and gas. They can be more noticeable after eating quickly, swallowing air, drinking fizzy drinks, or when gas is passing through the bowel. Indigestion may add fullness, belching, nausea, or upper-abdominal burning. Acid Reflux can cause burning and repeated belching, while gastritis, an ulcer, food intolerance, or an infection may cause broader symptoms. The sound itself does not identify a particular condition.

Pay attention to whether the gurgling occurs with diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, fever, bloating, or a specific food. A symptom diary can help separate harmless digestive noises from a recurring pattern that deserves review.

Eat slowly, take smaller portions, and chew thoroughly. Limit fizzy drinks, chewing gum, and habits that make you swallow air. Gentle movement after a meal may help gas pass; avoid lying down immediately after eating. Drink fluids regularly and change only one suspected food trigger at a time so you can see what affects you. A pharmacist can advise on a short-term option if discomfort is the main problem.

Do not repeatedly self-treat if the pattern continues, wakes you, or affects your appetite. Arrange a clinician review and bring your symptom diary and medicine list.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen with vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, or breathing trouble. Prompt medical advice is also appropriate for persistent vomiting, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or a clear change in bowel habits.

Ask whether the noises fit gas and normal bowel movement, whether constipation or food intolerance could contribute, and whether reflux, gastritis, or an ulcer should be considered. Ask which changes would require urgent review and whether any of your medicines can alter digestion.
