Can indigestion be an early pregnancy sign?

Indigestion can occur in early pregnancy, but it is not specific enough to confirm pregnancy without a pregnancy test. Hormonal changes may affect digestion, while stress, food, medicines, or a stomach condition can cause the same feeling. A missed period and other symptoms may provide context, but testing is the reliable next step.

Indigestion may include burning, fullness, burping, nausea, or discomfort in the upper abdomen. Early pregnancy can change how the digestive system moves and responds, but indigestion alone cannot establish the cause. Acid Reflux, Gastritis, a Peptic Ulcer, or Helicobacter Pylori Infection can also produce similar symptoms. Gallstones may cause distinct upper-right abdominal pain, often after eating, rather than simple occasional indigestion.

If pregnancy is possible, use a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and repeat or seek advice if the result is unclear and your period does not arrive. Eat smaller meals, avoid foods that trigger burning, and remain upright after eating. Check painkillers, antacids, and supplements with a pharmacist or doctor before using them when pregnancy is possible. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.

Seek prompt advice for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding with pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Urgent care is also needed for chest pressure, breathing difficulty, vomit with blood, or black stools. Arrange a routine review if indigestion persists or keeps returning after pregnancy has been excluded.
