The short answer
Nighttime indigestion often happens when reflux or a full stomach worsens after lying down, but repeated symptoms deserve assessment. Burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid, upper-abdominal discomfort, burping, or cough may interrupt sleep. Note when you last ate and whether the sensation improves after sitting upright.
Why symptoms appear at night
Lying down removes gravity's help in keeping stomach contents down. A large or late meal, alcohol, caffeine, smoking, or tight clothing may add pressure or relax the valve above the stomach. Night symptoms can occur with Acid Reflux or a Hiatus Hernia; Gastritis, a Peptic Ulcer, or Helicobacter Pylori Infection may cause upper-abdominal discomfort at other times too. The symptom pattern does not identify one cause by itself.
Steps before bedtime
Finish your evening meal well before lying down, choose a smaller portion, and avoid personal triggers in the late evening. Sit upright after eating and keep water nearby. If symptoms start, sit up rather than lying flat. Raising the head end of the bed can help some people; do this securely rather than stacking loose pillows. Ask a pharmacist about Acid Reflux Medication if symptoms recur, especially if you already take other medicines.
When nighttime symptoms need care
Arrange a review if indigestion repeatedly wakes you, needs frequent self-treatment, or continues despite changing meal timing. Seek emergency help for chest pressure, sweating, breathlessness, fainting, severe sudden pain, vomiting blood, or black stools. Prompt medical advice is also needed for trouble swallowing, repeated vomiting, or unexplained weight loss.
What to discuss
Tell your doctor how often symptoms wake you, their relation to meals, and whether you have cough, swallowing difficulty, or pain. Ask whether reflux treatment or evaluation for another stomach condition is suitable.
