Indigestion, chest pain and burping

Burping releases swallowed air from the stomach. Eating quickly, talking while eating, fizzy drinks and chewing gum can increase swallowed air and pressure. Reflux may add a sour taste or burning behind the breastbone. Gastritis, gallstones, a hiatus hernia, Helicobacter pylori infection or a peptic ulcer can cause nearby upper-abdominal symptoms, too. These digestive explanations do not establish the cause of chest pain.

Describe whether pain changes after burping, meals, movement or lying down. Also mention exertion, sweating, dizziness, nausea, palpitations and breathing difficulty; these features can change how urgently you need care.

Eat at a slower pace, take smaller bites and limit fizzy drinks if they trigger burping. Stay upright after meals and avoid lying down immediately. Keep a note of foods, medicines and activities linked with episodes. A pharmacist can help you choose an appropriate indigestion option, but do not use temporary relief as proof that chest pain is harmless. Recurring symptoms deserve a clinical review.

Call emergency services for crushing, squeezing or persistent chest pain, or pain with breathlessness, faintness, cold sweating, marked weakness or spread to the arm, jaw, back or shoulder. Seek urgent care for vomiting blood, black stools or sudden severe abdominal pain. If you are unsure whether pain is digestive or cardiac, choose urgent assessment.
