Short answer

Indigestion can cause nausea when irritation or slowed movement in the upper digestive tract affects the stomach and nearby organs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pattern
Nausea may accompany upper-abdominal discomfort, bloating, or heartburn.
Useful detail
Record the timing of symptoms, meals, medicines, and any vomiting.
Urgent warning
Blood in vomit or stools, severe pain, chest pain, or breathing trouble needs urgent help.

What the combination may mean

Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, describes discomfort or burning in the upper abdomen, early fullness, bloating, or frequent belching. Nausea may occur alongside these symptoms, especially after a large, rich, spicy, or fatty meal. Reflux of stomach contents, inflammation of the stomach lining, a hiatus hernia, peptic ulcer, gallstones, or Helicobacter pylori infection can also produce overlapping upper-abdominal symptoms. These possibilities cannot be distinguished from nausea alone.

Notice when symptoms begin, whether eating changes them, and whether you also have heartburn, vomiting, pain under the right ribs, black stools, or difficulty swallowing. This pattern helps a clinician decide whether the problem fits uncomplicated indigestion or needs further assessment.

What may help

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating rather than lying down straight away. Limit foods and drinks that clearly trigger symptoms, which may include alcohol, caffeine, very spicy food, or high-fat meals. Avoid smoking, and review medicines with a pharmacist or clinician because some pain relievers and other medicines can irritate the stomach.

A pharmacist can explain whether an appropriate antacid or acid-reducing treatment may suit your symptoms and how to use it safely. Do not start or stop prescribed medicine without advice. Arrange a medical review if nausea keeps returning, lasts beyond a short episode, or is affecting eating, drinking, sleep, or daily activities.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, vomit containing blood, black or tarry stools, fainting, marked weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, chest pain, or trouble breathing. Get prompt medical advice if you have difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms that are progressively worsening. Nausea with these features should not be assumed to be simple indigestion.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what might be causing the nausea, whether your symptom pattern suggests reflux or stomach irritation, and whether testing for Helicobacter pylori or another cause is appropriate. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, together with notes about meals, triggers, vomiting, bowel changes, and the timing of pain.

Questions people ask

Is nausea by itself enough to diagnose indigestion?

No. Nausea has many possible causes, so a clinician considers its timing, associated symptoms, medicines, and medical history.

Can acid reflux and nausea happen together?

Yes. Reflux can irritate the upper digestive tract and may occur with heartburn, a sour taste, belching, or nausea.

When should recurring indigestion be checked?

Arrange a medical review when it keeps returning, interferes with daily life, or occurs with swallowing difficulty, worsening pain, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss.
