Short answer

Indigestion at bedtime often becomes more noticeable after a late meal or when lying down soon after eating.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why bedtime can expose symptoms

A full stomach and a horizontal position can make reflux easier to notice, causing burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid or an unpleasant taste. Indigestion may also feel like upper abdominal pressure, nausea or uncomfortable fullness. Large evening meals, fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine and tight clothing can aggravate symptoms in some people.

Night-time symptoms may occur with acid reflux, gastritis or a hiatus hernia, but the timing alone does not establish a diagnosis. Recurrent symptoms can also relate to peptic ulcer disease, gallstones or Helicobacter pylori infection, so mention the pattern if it is becoming regular.

Steps before sleep

Aim to finish your evening meal well before lying down, keep the portion moderate and remain upright afterwards. Raise the upper body during sleep if a clinician has advised this, and avoid bending or exercising immediately after eating. Keep a brief diary of foods, drinks, medicine timing and symptoms so personal triggers become clearer.

A pharmacist can discuss an antacid or alginate and check whether it fits your medicines. Acid reflux medication may be considered when symptoms recur, but ongoing night disturbance deserves a clinician’s assessment rather than indefinite self-treatment.

When to seek care

Book medical advice when bedtime indigestion happens frequently, wakes you repeatedly, or persists despite changes to meal timing. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing or yellowing of the skin. These signs need assessment even if they occur at night.

Useful questions

Could reflux or a hiatus hernia explain my night symptoms? How long before bed should I finish eating? Is a medicine contributing? Should I try a treatment, and what symptoms mean I should seek urgent care?
