Short answer

Indigestion can happen in early pregnancy, but it should not be assumed to explain every abdominal symptom.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible contributors
Hormonal changes, reflux, nausea, and bloating
Medication check
Ask before using medicines or herbal products
Urgent warning
Severe one-sided pain, bleeding, fainting, or persistent vomiting

What it can mean

Pregnancy-related hormonal changes can relax the muscle between the stomach and food pipe, allowing reflux and burning discomfort. Nausea, altered appetite, bloating, and constipation may make the upper abdomen feel unsettled. Indigestion does not confirm pregnancy, and a pregnancy test or clinical assessment is needed if pregnancy is possible. Digestive conditions such as acid reflux, gastritis, gallstones, or a peptic ulcer can also occur during pregnancy. Pain low in the abdomen, bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, or one-sided pain needs a different assessment rather than being labelled indigestion.

What to do now

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, remain upright after eating, and avoid foods or drinks that clearly trigger burning. Keep fluids down with frequent sips and choose plain foods if nausea is strong. Check before taking antacids, acid reflux medication, painkillers, or herbal products because pregnancy changes which options are suitable. Tell a maternity clinician or doctor about all medicines and the date of your last menstrual period. They can recommend pregnancy-compatible treatment and check hydration if vomiting is troublesome.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, chest pain, breathlessness, vomiting blood, black stools, fever, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly if vomiting prevents normal drinking or urination becomes much less frequent. Persistent indigestion, pain that is getting worse, or symptoms that begin after a medicine should be reviewed rather than self-treated.

Questions for your doctor

Which medicines are suitable at my stage of pregnancy? Do my symptoms fit reflux, or should bleeding or pain be assessed separately? How can I prevent dehydration while nausea continues?
