Indigestion and bad breath: what to know

Reflux can bring acidic or bitter fluid into the throat and leave an unpleasant taste or odour. Indigestion may also reflect stomach irritation, an ulcer, or a hiatus hernia; see [Indigestion](/symptoms/indigestion/) and [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/) for background.

Bad breath often begins in the mouth, where plaque, gum disease, tongue coating, dental infection, dry mouth, or tobacco can contribute. Bad breath does not by itself identify a stomach condition. Changes in smell, taste, bowel habits, or abdominal pain help a clinician work out whether the symptoms share a cause.

Brush teeth and the tongue gently, clean between the teeth, drink water regularly, and arrange a dental check if the odour persists. Eat slowly, choose smaller meals, and avoid lying down soon after eating if reflux is a pattern.

Arrange medical care for ongoing indigestion, repeated vomiting, painful swallowing, unexplained weight loss, black stools, blood in vomit, or severe abdominal pain. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, breathlessness, faintness, or sudden sweating, even if the episode feels like indigestion.

Ask whether reflux, dry mouth, gum disease, or a medicine could explain the symptoms; whether you need dental assessment; and whether tests for stomach irritation, an ulcer, or Helicobacter pylori are appropriate.
