Indigestion after drinking alcohol: what to know

Alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and may make acid-related symptoms more noticeable. A large meal, lying down soon after drinking, or mixing alcohol with medicines that irritate the stomach can add to the discomfort. Symptoms may include burning or pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, bloating, belching, or acid coming up into the throat.

Repeated upper-abdominal symptoms may need assessment for gastritis, acid reflux, a peptic ulcer, or another problem. Gallstones can also cause upper abdominal pain after meals. Alcohol-triggered indigestion does not by itself prove any particular condition.

Stop drinking alcohol while symptoms are present. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink, eat a small meal if tolerated, and stay upright rather than lying flat after eating. Avoid smoking, very rich foods, and anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless prescribed. Note how much you drank, what you ate, and when symptoms began.
