Incubation period for tetanus

Tetanus symptoms may begin several days to several weeks after bacteria enter a wound, and timing varies. A longer interval does not rule out tetanus, particularly when vaccination history is uncertain or the wound was not assessed.

Tetanus bacteria can produce a toxin in damaged tissue. Early illness may cause jaw stiffness, difficulty opening the mouth, trouble swallowing, neck stiffness, or painful muscle tightening. Symptoms can progress and affect breathing muscles. The incubation period cannot confirm or exclude tetanus, and a small puncture wound may be easy to overlook.

Clean a wound promptly with running water and remove visible dirt without digging into the tissue. Seek medical advice for a deep puncture, crush injury, burn, animal bite, wound contaminated with soil or saliva, or any injury treated late. Tell the clinician when the injury happened and bring your vaccination record if available. Tetanus Vaccination may be recommended after exposure, depending on the wound and previous doses.

Get urgent medical help for jaw stiffness, painful spasms, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening muscle tightness after an injury. These symptoms need immediate assessment even if the wound looks small or the injury occurred weeks earlier. Do not wait for a fever before seeking help.
