Incubation period for mumps

Mumps symptoms commonly appear about two to three weeks after exposure, although the timing can vary. A person may be able to spread the virus before noticeable swelling develops, so exposure information matters even when someone feels well.

The incubation period is the time between catching an infection and developing symptoms. Early mumps symptoms can include fever, tiredness, headache, muscle aches, and reduced appetite. Painful swelling near one or both cheeks or below the ears may follow as the salivary glands become inflamed. These features can overlap with other illnesses, so timing alone cannot confirm mumps.

Record when the contact occurred and watch for fever or swollen glands during the following weeks. Avoid close contact with others if symptoms develop, particularly around babies, pregnant people, or anyone with a weakened immune system.
