What should you know about incubation for scarlet fever?

Incubation is the time between contact with an infection and the first symptoms. During this interval, a person may feel well, so a recent exposure does not confirm that illness will develop. Scarlet fever is linked to the same group of bacteria that can cause strep throat. Early illness may bring a sore throat, fever, headache, swollen glands, or a fine rough-feeling rash that spreads from the trunk.

Symptoms can overlap with other childhood infections. A clinician may examine the throat and decide whether testing is needed, particularly when fever and sore throat occur together or there has been close contact with a diagnosed case.

Watch for fever, throat pain, swollen neck glands, and a new rash during the days after contact. Do not share cups, utensils, towels, or toothbrushes, and wash hands after coughing, sneezing, or touching nasal secretions. If symptoms appear, arrange medical advice rather than using leftover antibiotics. Stay home from school or work according to the clinician’s advice and local guidance.

Arrange prompt assessment for a persistent fever, severe sore throat, difficulty swallowing, dehydration, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading rash. Emergency help is needed for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, unusual drowsiness, or inability to swallow fluids. Early treatment can reduce illness and transmission when a bacterial diagnosis is made.
