Increased heartburn before labor: what to know

Short answer
Increased heartburn before labor is often related to pregnancy changes that relax the food-pipe valve and reduce room in the stomach, but severe or unusual symptoms need review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean
Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused when stomach contents move upward. Later pregnancy can make reflux easier because hormonal changes affect the valve between the stomach and food pipe, while the growing uterus changes pressure around the stomach. Acid Reflux can cause a sour taste, regurgitation, or symptoms after meals. Gastritis, a hiatus hernia, obesity, or a peptic ulcer may also be associated with upper digestive symptoms, but heartburn before labor does not by itself identify one of these conditions. New chest symptoms should not be assumed to be reflux.
What you can try
Choose smaller meals, eat slowly, and avoid lying down soon after eating. Sit upright during and after meals, raise the head of your sleeping position if your maternity team approves, and notice foods or drinks that trigger symptoms. Ask your obstetric clinician or pharmacist before using an antacid or acid reflux medication because pregnancy, other medicines, and timing can affect the safest choice. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team if heartburn is persistent, prevents eating or sleeping, or does not improve with agreed measures. Seek urgent care for severe chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe upper-abdominal pain, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or reduced fetal movement. These symptoms require prompt pregnancy assessment and should not be attributed to ordinary heartburn.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which foods and medicines may worsen symptoms, which treatment is suitable at your stage of pregnancy, and whether your pain could reflect something other than reflux. Ask what maternity warning signs should prompt immediate contact.
