The laboratory result may not clearly fit a reactive or non-reactive category. This can happen when an antibody signal is borderline, when different syphilis tests do not agree, or when testing is done at a stage when the immune response is still developing. A result like this is a reason for clarification, not a diagnosis by itself.

Syphilis testing may use treponemal tests, non-treponemal tests, or a combination. Tell the clinician about any earlier syphilis treatment, pregnancy, current medicines, and recent sexual exposures so the follow-up plan is appropriate.

Arrange prompt medical review if you have a painless sore, a new rash, swollen glands, or changes affecting your eyes, hearing, sensation, or movement. Seek urgent care for sudden vision change, severe eye pain, sudden hearing loss, weakness, confusion, or a severe headache. Pregnancy also warrants timely clinical advice after an inconclusive result because untreated syphilis can affect pregnancy and the baby.
