In Pregnancy Body Itching: What You Should Know

Short answer
Body itching during pregnancy is often related to dry, stretching skin, but itching without a rash or on the palms and soles needs prompt assessment by your maternity clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Dryness, stretching skin, heat, product irritation, and existing skin conditions
- Prompt assessment
- Severe itch, no rash, or itch on the palms and soles
- Self-care
- Fragrance-free moisturiser, lukewarm washing, cool surroundings, and loose clothing
The short answer
Pregnancy can make skin feel tighter and more sensitive. Heat, sweat, new products, and existing skin conditions can add to the irritation. The location, appearance of the skin, timing, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician decide whether this is ordinary irritation or something requiring testing.
What pregnancy itching may mean
A mild itch over the abdomen, breasts, or other areas where skin is stretching may occur with dryness and increased sensitivity. Scratching can break the skin and create redness, soreness, or small scabs, even when the original problem was simple dryness.
An itchy, inflamed, or scaly rash may fit a condition such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, hives, psoriasis, or another skin disorder. A very itchy rash that is worse at night, especially between the fingers or around the wrists, can also require evaluation for scabies. These conditions are not diagnosed from itching alone.
Intense itching with little or no rash can sometimes be linked to a pregnancy-related liver disorder. It may be strongest on the palms and soles and may disturb sleep. A clinician may ask about urine and stool colour, yellowing of the skin or eyes, and your pregnancy symptoms, then arrange appropriate checks.
What you can do now
Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after a short lukewarm shower or bath. Choose loose, breathable clothing and keep the room comfortably cool. Pat rather than rub the skin dry, and keep fingernails short to reduce damage from scratching.
Pause newly introduced soaps, detergents, perfumes, and body products until the cause is clearer. Do not start an oral medicine, medicated cream, essential oil, or herbal product in pregnancy without checking its suitability with a maternity clinician or pharmacist. A cool compress may calm a localised area temporarily.
Arrange advice if the itch is persistent, spreading, severe, or interfering with sleep. Take note of where it occurs, whether a rash is present, when it began, and what products or medicines you used before it started. A photo can help if the rash changes before the appointment.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or rapidly worsening itching, itching that is strongest on the palms or soles, or itching without an obvious rash. Seek prompt medical advice as well if you notice dark urine, unusually pale stools, yellow skin or eyes, marked nausea, or pain under the right ribs.
Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading raised rash. Contact your maternity service urgently if you are worried about reduced fetal movement or another sudden change in your pregnancy symptoms. A new rash with fever, blisters, skin pain, or signs of infection also needs prompt review.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask: Could this pattern suggest a pregnancy-related cause, and do I need blood tests? Which moisturiser or treatment is suitable at my stage of pregnancy? What symptoms should make me call the maternity team again? If there is a rash, could a contact trigger, eczema, hives, psoriasis, or scabies be contributing?

Questions people ask
Is body itching during pregnancy always a skin problem?
No. Dryness and stretching can irritate skin, but intense itching without a rash can have a pregnancy-related cause and should be assessed by your maternity clinician.
Can I use an anti-itch medicine while pregnant?
Check with your maternity clinician or pharmacist first. They can consider the product, strength, application area, and stage of pregnancy before recommending treatment.
What if itching keeps me awake?
Tell your maternity team, particularly if the itch is severe, has no visible rash, or affects the palms and soles. Avoid scratching hard and use a cool compress while waiting for advice.
