Impetigo without antibiotics: what to know

Impetigo can cause superficial sores and crusts that spread through contact. A clinician may recommend local skin care when the affected area is limited and the person is otherwise well. The plan depends on the skin findings, age, location, and whether infection is extending. Avoid assuming that every crusted rash is impetigo.

Without antibiotics does not mean without treatment. Gentle cleansing, protection from scratching, and preventing contact with sores are active parts of care. Review is needed if the pattern changes or healing does not begin.

Wash hands before and after care. Soften and gently remove loose crusts with warm water, pat the skin dry, and cover sores with a clean dressing if possible. Keep nails short and discourage picking. Use separate towels and face cloths, avoid sharing clothing or bedding, and wash items that touch the lesions.

Do not apply leftover antibiotics, antiseptic mixtures, or steroid creams unless a clinician recommends them. Keep children away from close-contact activities according to the advice given by their healthcare professional or local guidance.

Arrange an appointment if new sores appear, redness spreads, the skin becomes warm or painful, or the person develops fever or feels unwell. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly expanding redness, swelling near an eye, red streaking, or marked illness.

Ask whether cleansing alone is suitable, how often to clean and cover the area, which activities to avoid, and what change should prompt a review. Mention eczema, diabetes, immune problems, recurrent episodes, and any household member with similar sores.
