Home care for impetigo: what helps

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection. Simple care protects the damaged skin and limits contact with fluid from sores; it does not remove bacteria in every case. Honey, essential oils, alcohol, harsh antiseptics and household products can irritate broken skin or trigger an allergic reaction. Crusting skin may also come from another problem, such as Atopic Dermatitis, so treatment should match the cause.

Children and adults can pass impetigo through touch, shared towels, clothing or bedding. Keeping the area clean and covered supports infection control while a clinician decides whether topical or oral treatment is needed.

Wash the area gently with clean water and mild cleanser, then pat it dry. Cover sores with a clean dressing when possible, wash hands before and after care, and avoid scratching or squeezing. Use separate towels and washcloths, change clothing that becomes contaminated, and clean frequently touched surfaces. Do not share prescribed medicine. Seek medical advice when sores spread, recur, become increasingly painful, or fail to improve with careful hygiene. A young infant, a person with reduced immunity, or anyone who seems unusually unwell should be assessed promptly.
