What should you know about impetigo spread to adults?

Adults may acquire impetigo by touching an infected sore, drainage or a dressing, or by sharing towels, clothing, bedding, razors or cosmetics. Bacteria enter more easily through cuts, grazes, insect bites, shaving irritation or an existing itchy skin condition. The infection can also move from one part of a person’s body to another when a lesion is scratched.

An adult with impetigo may notice small blisters, shallow sores, crusting or new lesions near an original area. A crusted patch is not automatically impetigo, so examination matters, particularly when several household members have new skin changes.

Wash hands with soap and water after touching the affected skin, applying medicine or changing a dressing. Keep sores covered with clean dressings when possible, do not pick them, and avoid close skin-to-skin contact until a clinician says it is reasonable. Use separate towels, washcloths, bedding and razors, and launder clothing that contacts drainage.

Arrange an assessment for suspected infection so the treatment plan fits the number and location of sores. Follow directions exactly and do not share prescribed antibiotics with a relative, even if the rash looks similar.

Seek prompt care if lesions spread despite cleaning, pain or swelling increases, redness extends around a sore, or fever and weakness develop. Urgent assessment is needed for severe swelling near the eye, vision changes, confusion or difficulty swallowing. Adults with diabetes, reduced immunity or extensive skin involvement should contact a clinician early.

Ask when close contact can safely resume, which household items need washing, whether anyone with symptoms should be examined, and how to protect broken skin. Mention exposure to a child or adult with sores, shaving cuts, eczema, and any antibiotic allergy.
