Conditions that can resemble impetigo

Impetigo may produce blisters, shallow erosions, moisture, and yellow-brown crusts. Atopic Dermatitis can cause itchy, cracked, inflamed skin that becomes crusted after scratching. Contact dermatitis often follows exposure to a product or material and may have a clear pattern. Cold sores tend to cluster near the lip and can be preceded by tingling. Fungal infections may form scaly or ring-shaped areas.

Location, speed of change, itch versus pain, exposure history, and whether others have similar sores help guide assessment. A clinician may need to look closely at the skin and occasionally test a sample.

Keep the area clean, avoid picking, and pause new fragranced products or cosmetics applied there. Cover open or oozing skin, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, bedding, razors, or makeup. Do not assume an antibiotic will help every rash: treatment for a fungal or viral cause differs. Use prescribed Topical Antibiotic Therapy only as directed.

Book a medical assessment when a rash is spreading, recurring, painful, draining, or not improving with sensible skin care. Seek urgent advice for fever, rapidly expanding redness, severe pain, facial or eye swelling, or feeling faint or very unwell. Take a list of new products, medicines, travel, animal contact, and sick contacts to the appointment.
