Impetigo and Polysporin: what to consider

Impetigo can cause fragile blisters, red erosions and yellow-brown crusts, but several skin problems can look similar. Polysporin products may contain different ingredients, and some people develop irritation or allergy to topical antibiotics. The medicine must suit the site and the suspected bacteria; an ointment intended for minor cuts should not be assumed to treat every facial, extensive or recurrent rash. Crusting skin can also occur with eczema, including atopic dermatitis, or other conditions.

Wash hands, cleanse the area gently, soften loose crusts and pat dry before applying only the directed amount. Keep the ointment away from the eyes and mouth, and do not cover it with an airtight dressing unless advised. Stop and seek advice for worsening redness, swelling, blistering or intense itching. Use a separate towel, avoid picking, and do not share the tube. A clinician or pharmacist can explain whether topical antibiotic therapy is appropriate and how to use it.

Seek prompt care when infection is spreading, very tender, hot or swollen, when there are many lesions, or when the eye area is involved. Fever, unusual sleepiness, rapidly worsening redness or feeling generally ill need urgent attention. Repeated episodes, failure to improve with advised care, or infection in someone with reduced immune protection also justify assessment. Oral antibiotics for a skin infection may be considered when topical treatment cannot reach all affected skin.

Ask whether the rash is definitely impetigo, which ingredients are in the product, how often it should be applied, and what reaction means you should stop. Ask how to clean the area, protect family members and manage any underlying eczema.
