The Organism That Causes Impetigo: What to Know

Short answer
Impetigo is caused by bacteria entering or multiplying on a damaged skin surface, producing contagious sores and crusting.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What permits infection
- A break or weakened barrier in the skin
- How it spreads
- Contact with sores or contaminated personal items
- How it is assessed
- Usually by examining the skin, with testing in selected cases
Understanding the organism
Bacteria can live on skin without causing illness, but a scratch, insect bite, eczema flare, or rubbed area can give them an opening. Impetigo may then produce small blisters, shallow erosions, fluid, and a yellowish crust. The organism can move from one site to another through fingers, towels, clothing, or close contact. A clinician usually diagnoses the pattern by examining the skin; testing may be considered when infection keeps returning or does not respond as expected. [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) can contribute to repeated scratching and barrier damage.
Reducing transmission
Wash hands often, cleanse lesions gently, keep nails short, and avoid sharing towels, razors, bedding, cosmetics, or clothing that touches the affected area. Cover a sore when practical and wash used fabrics. Do not scrape off crusts aggressively. Treatment is selected according to the extent and location of infection; it may include a prescribed topical medicine or an oral antibiotic. See [Topical Antibiotic Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-antibiotic-therapy/) and [Antibiotics For Skin Infection](/treatments/medical-dermatology/antibiotic-therapy-for-skin-infection/).
When to get medical help
Arrange assessment when sores are spreading, repeatedly returning, unusually painful, or accompanied by increasing warmth and swelling. Seek urgent care for fever with marked illness, rapidly expanding redness, eye-area involvement, or signs of an allergic reaction to treatment. A recurrent infection may need a fresh examination rather than repeated self-treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance is typical, whether a sample is useful, what may have damaged the skin barrier, and how to reduce recurrence at home.

Questions people ask
Is the organism always dangerous?
The bacteria can cause a local skin infection, but prompt assessment helps limit spread and identify people who need treatment.
Can impetigo return after treatment?
It can recur, especially when scratching or another skin problem keeps damaging the barrier, so recurring sores deserve review.
