Impetigo near the throat: what to know

Impetigo is a skin infection, so a sore, blister, or crust on the neck, under the chin, or near the jaw is different from a throat infection inside the mouth. The skin may be itchy, tender, moist, or covered with yellow-brown crust. Scratching can move bacteria along the neck or to the face and hands. A sore throat, trouble swallowing, cough, or mouth ulcers may point to another problem and should not be labelled impetigo without an examination.

Clean the skin gently with lukewarm water, pat it dry, and wash hands after contact. Keep collars, scarves, necklaces, and hair away from draining sores when they rub the area. Do not pick crusts or share towels, pillowcases, razors, or clothing. Avoid applying products inside the mouth or throat unless a clinician specifically prescribes them.

Seek prompt care for spreading neck redness, increasing swelling, worsening pain, fever, or swollen glands. Get urgent help if breathing or swallowing becomes difficult, saliva cannot be swallowed, the voice changes suddenly, or the neck becomes rapidly swollen. These symptoms can signal a problem deeper than a superficial skin infection.
