What should you know about impetigo honey crusted?

Impetigo often begins as small red sores or fluid-filled blisters. When they open, fluid dries into a yellow or honey-coloured crust, commonly around the nose and mouth but also on exposed skin. The crust itself does not identify the exact germ or treatment; a clinician can assess the pattern and extent. Scratching can move infection to nearby skin, while eczema or another itchy rash can create breaks that make infection easier to develop.

Keep the area separate from shared towels, face cloths, clothing and bedding. Crusting skin that is spreading, tender or associated with drainage deserves an assessment rather than repeated picking or harsh antiseptics.

Wash your hands before and after touching the area. Soften and clean crusts with warm water and a clean cloth; do not force them off. Pat dry, cover sores with a clean dressing when practical, and keep fingernails short. Do not share personal items, and wash used linens and clothing regularly. Arrange medical advice because impetigo may need prescribed topical or oral treatment, depending on how many areas are involved and where they are located.

Seek prompt medical care if redness, warmth, swelling or pain is rapidly increasing, if fever or marked unwellness develops, or if sores are near the eyes. Urgent assessment is appropriate for severe swelling, confusion or difficulty breathing.
