Treatment for impetigo in the nappy area

Nappy dermatitis commonly causes redness in areas exposed to moisture and friction. Impetigo may add fragile blisters, weeping sores, yellow-brown crust, or infection spreading beyond the usual contact area. Fungal rash can also affect skin folds and may need a different medicine. Several rashes can overlap, so the appearance and the child’s general condition guide assessment. Avoid assuming every bright-red or sore nappy rash is bacterial.

Change nappies frequently, rinse with lukewarm water or use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Allow the skin to air briefly during changes when practical. Wash hands before and after care, use separate towels, and avoid sharing creams. A clinician may prescribe an antibiotic for confirmed impetigo. Obtain prompt medical advice if sores are spreading, blistering, very painful, associated with fever, or causing poor feeding or reduced wet nappies.
