What should you know about impetigo body rash?

Impetigo may begin as small red spots, itchy bumps or shallow sores. They can ooze, then develop a yellow-brown crust as they dry. Several patches may join or appear after scratching another irritated area. The rash can affect uncovered skin or areas where minor cuts, insect bites or eczema have weakened the skin barrier. It spreads through direct contact and through shared towels, clothing or bedding. Crusting skin is one feature clinicians may assess, but other infections and inflammatory conditions can look similar.

A clinician may diagnose it by examining the pattern and the skin surface. Mention when the rash started, whether it is spreading, and whether anyone close to you has similar sores.

Wash your hands after touching the area, keep the rash covered with a clean loose dressing when practical, and avoid scratching or picking crusts. Clean towels, clothes and bedding regularly, and do not share personal items. Keep nails short, especially for children. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy for a small, localised infection or antibiotic treatment taken by mouth when the affected area is more extensive. Use the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and complete the advised course.

Arrange medical advice when sores are spreading, multiplying, painful, or not settling with basic cleansing. Seek prompt assessment if the skin around them becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or tender, or if you feel feverish or unwell. Urgent care is appropriate for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, marked weakness, or involvement close to the eyes. Do not wait for a rash to become widespread before asking for help, because treatment can also reduce transmission.
