Impetigo on Black Skin: What to Know

On deeper skin tones, redness may be less obvious. Look for a new area that is darker, violaceous, grey, or unusually shiny, especially when it is itchy, tender, moist, blistered, eroded, or covered by crust. The border may be easier to notice by texture or swelling than by colour. After infection settles, a darker or lighter mark can remain while the skin recovers; this does not by itself prove that bacteria are still active.

Arrange an assessment if new sores, blisters, wetness, or crusting are appearing. Clean gently with mild soap and water, pat dry, and avoid picking. Do not apply strong antiseptics, steroid creams, or leftover antibiotics unless a clinician recommends them.
