Impetigo and Neosporin: what to know

Impetigo often produces fragile blisters or shallow sores that leave a sticky yellow-brown crust. A product sold for minor cuts may not match the cause, severity, or location of the infection. Some people also develop irritation or allergic contact dermatitis from topical antibiotic ingredients, which can add redness and itching and obscure the original problem.

Clean the area gently, pat it dry, wash hands frequently, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, or razors. Do not apply Neosporin inside the nose, mouth, or eyes, and do not layer several medicated products. A clinician can decide whether a prescribed topical antibiotic is appropriate or whether treatment for a wider infection is needed. Follow the directions and keep the medicine away from children.

Seek medical advice when crusted sores are multiplying, painful, near the eye, associated with fever, or not settling after gentle care. Get urgent assessment for marked facial swelling, eye pain, vision change, or a rapidly expanding red area. Repeated episodes also deserve review for triggers such as eczema or skin breaks.

Ask whether the rash is impetigo or a reaction to an ointment, whether a prescription topical treatment is suitable, and how long to use it. Tell the clinician about previous reactions to antibiotics and every product already applied.
