Impetigo and eyes: what to know

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection that commonly causes red sores, oozing, and yellow-brown crusts. Around an eyelid, swelling or crusting may make the area look irritated. Do not assume every rash near the eye is impetigo: eczema, an insect bite, or another infection can look similar. Crusting skin can be gently described to a clinician without rubbing the area.

Wash hands before and after touching the area, clean gently with lukewarm water, and avoid picking crusts. Do not put non-prescribed creams, cosmetics, or medicine into the eye. Use a separate towel and pillowcase, avoid sharing personal items, and keep the affected skin covered only if a clinician advises it. A clinician may recommend topical or oral antibiotics depending on the location and extent.

Arrange prompt medical care for swelling around the eye, eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, pain when moving the eye, fever, or rapidly spreading redness. Seek urgent help if the eye cannot open normally or the person seems very unwell. These signs need assessment because the tissues around the eye require different treatment from a small skin sore.

Ask whether the eyelid and the eye itself are involved, which treatment is suitable for this location, and how to clean the area safely. Mention contact-lens use, allergies, fever, vision changes, or any recent skin condition.
