Symptoms can begin as a red patch or small blister, then become a shallow erosion with clear or cloudy fluid. Once the fluid dries, a yellow, brown or honey-coloured crust may cover the area. Itching can encourage touching and spread the infection to nearby skin. Some people have local tenderness without feeling generally ill. Crusting skin is one clue, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause; dermatitis, insect bites and viral sores may overlap in appearance.
