What should you know about impetigo above lip?

The skin may begin with a red, irritated patch, tiny fluid-filled blisters or shallow sores. Fluid can dry into a golden or brown crust, especially where the upper lip meets the nose. Mild tenderness or itching may lead to rubbing, which can move bacteria to nearby skin. The crusting is a symptom of the infection, not proof that the area is healing. Irritated skin, including skin affected by atopic dermatitis, can provide an easier entry point for bacteria.

Arrange a clinician review, particularly if the sore is spreading or returning. Wash hands before and after touching the area. Clean gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid picking the crust. Do not share towels, face cloths, razors, cosmetics or lip products. Keep the area covered only as advised, and wash used linens and clothing. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy for a small, limited area or antibiotic therapy for a skin infection when broader treatment is needed. Use the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and do not put non-prescribed steroid or antiseptic products on the sore.

Seek prompt medical care if redness, warmth, swelling or pain is increasing, if pus is collecting, or if sores are appearing in several places. Same-day advice is sensible when the area is close to the eye, you feel feverish or unwell, or the infection is not settling with the advised treatment. Urgent assessment is needed for eye swelling, vision changes, severe facial swelling or difficulty breathing.
