What should you know about imperforate hymen symptoms?

An imperforate hymen is a membrane covering the vaginal opening. It can be present from birth without causing noticeable symptoms. After puberty, menstrual blood may collect behind the membrane instead of leaving the body. Pain that returns around the time a period would be expected, a feeling of fullness, lower-back discomfort, or a visibly bulging membrane may then develop.

Periods stopped or periods that never begin can have many causes. An imperforate hymen is one possible structural cause, and symptoms alone cannot confirm it. A clinician may assess the external area and use a Pelvic Ultrasound to examine the reproductive organs and any retained fluid.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecology or adolescent health clinician if periods have not started when expected, pain is recurring, or urination is difficult. Write down when pain occurs, whether it follows a monthly pattern, and any changes in urine or bowel function. Do not insert objects or attempt to pierce the membrane yourself, because this can cause injury and infection.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, inability to pass urine, vomiting, fever, fainting, or a swollen abdomen. These symptoms may reflect pressure or another condition requiring prompt treatment. A specialist can explain whether observation, imaging, or a procedure is appropriate and can address pain safely.
