What should you know about impending cellulitis?

Cellulitis affects deeper layers of skin and the tissues beneath them. It may enter through a cut, crack, bite, wound, or fungal infection between the toes. Skin can become warm, tender, red, and swollen, and the affected area may enlarge over time. A clinician may look for a break in the skin and examine how far the inflammation extends.

Athlete's Foot can create cracks that allow bacteria to enter. Type 2 Diabetes and other conditions that affect circulation or immune response can increase concern, so mention them during assessment.

Arrange same-day medical advice when redness, pain, warmth, or swelling is spreading or worsening. Marking the edge of redness with a pen and noting the time can help show change, but it does not replace examination. Keep the area clean, protect any wound, elevate a swollen limb when comfortable, and do not squeeze or puncture it. Treatment may include prescribed antibiotics.

Seek emergency care for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, very rapid spread, severe pain, skin turning dusky or blistered, or difficulty breathing. Fever with a worsening skin infection also needs urgent attention. These features can signal a serious infection, including Sepsis, particularly in someone who is very unwell.
