Immunotherapy for oesophageal cancer

Immunotherapy changes immune activity so the body can recognise and attack some cancer cells. It may be offered at a particular stage of treatment, alone or with another medicine, when the cancer assessment supports it. Testing the tumour and reviewing earlier treatment can help the team decide.

These approaches have different aims and side effects, so your team will explain why each is being considered.

Tell the oncology team about autoimmune disease, breathing problems, bowel symptoms, liver or kidney conditions, and all medicines or supplements. Report changes in swallowing, appetite, weight, pain, cough, or energy so they can be assessed alongside treatment effects.

Keep a written list of symptoms and their timing. Ask for help with eating and drinking if swallowing is difficult. Do not start a supplement or stop a prescribed medicine without checking with the treatment team.

Contact your cancer team promptly for worsening swallowing, repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea, new breathlessness, chest pain, yellowing of the skin, marked weakness, confusion, or a widespread rash. Immune-related inflammation can affect different organs and may need treatment quickly.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, fainting, sudden confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Use the urgent contact number supplied by your oncology service if one is available.
