Immediate relief for kidney stone pain

A stone can irritate the urinary tract or obstruct urine as it moves from the kidney toward the bladder. Pain may be severe and wave-like in the flank or abdomen, sometimes spreading toward the groin. Nausea, blood in the urine, painful urination, or difficulty passing urine can occur. Similar pain has other causes, so diagnosis matters.

Rest in a position that feels tolerable and use a suitable pain medicine only if you can take it safely; a pharmacist can check your health conditions and other medicines. Sip fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and do not force large amounts during severe pain or vomiting. Arrange a GP consultation, which may include urine tests or imaging such as an abdominal ultrasound.

Seek urgent help for fever, chills, feeling very unwell, persistent vomiting, one functioning kidney, or inability to pass urine. Sudden worsening pain, faintness, or signs of dehydration also need prompt assessment. Infection behind an obstruction can become serious and should not be managed at home.

Ask whether the pain pattern needs imaging, what pain relief is safe for you, and how much fluid is appropriate. Discuss whether the stone may pass without a procedure, how to recognise infection, and whether the stone should be collected for analysis.
