What should you know about imiquimod Zyclara?

Zyclara is a brand formulation of imiquimod, a topical medicine that signals the skin's immune system. It may be prescribed for particular superficial lesions, depending on their location and diagnosis. It is not a general treatment for every rough patch, mole or bump, and applying it to an unassessed growth can delay the right diagnosis.

The treated area may become red, itchy, dry, swollen, scaly, crusted or tender. Some people develop erosions or sores. The appearance can fluctuate during treatment, and irritation around the application site does not by itself show whether the lesion has cleared. Your prescriber may advise a pause if the reaction is too strong.

Read the supplied directions and follow the prescribed dose and schedule. Apply to clean, dry skin with washed hands, keep it away from the eyes and mouth, and wash your hands afterwards. Do not cover the area with a dressing unless instructed. Avoid shaving, exfoliating or using other irritating products on the treated skin without medical advice.

Use a plain protective moisturiser only if your clinician says it is suitable, and protect treated skin from avoidable sun exposure. Do not share sachets or cream. Record troublesome reactions and bring the product name and instructions to review so the plan can be adjusted safely.

Contact your prescriber if pain, swelling, ulceration or crusting becomes severe, if the reaction spreads beyond the intended area, or if you cannot continue normal activities. Prompt assessment is also needed for pus, fever, significant bleeding or eye exposure. Breathing trouble or swelling of the lips, face or throat requires urgent help.
