What should you know about imiquimod side effects treatment?

Imiquimod stimulates immune activity in the treated skin. Redness, dryness, scaling, crusting, itching, burning, soreness or swelling can therefore appear during a course. The visible reaction may change from one application to the next and can continue briefly after an application is washed away. A strong-looking response does not by itself show whether the underlying condition has fully cleared.

General symptoms such as feeling unwell, fever or swollen glands should be reported, especially if they are new or pronounced. Irritation can also be worse when the cream is used on broken skin, too large an area or a site that was not prescribed.

Use the exact treatment breaks your clinician gave you. Gently wash the area with water and a mild cleanser when instructed, pat it dry and avoid picking crusts. A bland, fragrance-free moisturiser may be appropriate during a break if the prescriber agrees. Avoid other active creams, exfoliants, shaving over the area and adhesive dressings unless specifically recommended.

Photographing the area for your follow-up can help show how the reaction changes, but do not delay care for a severe symptom. Never increase, extend or restart treatment without checking the prescription instructions.

Call the treating clinic if pain, swelling or weeping becomes difficult to manage, if the reaction extends well beyond the application site, or if you cannot follow the schedule because of discomfort. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, widespread hives, blistering over a large area or severe weakness.

Ask which reaction is expected for your diagnosis, how long to pause, what skin care is allowed during a break, and whether another medicine or dressing could worsen irritation.
