What should you know about imiquimod over the counter?

Imiquimod changes local immune activity and is used for selected skin conditions. A similar-looking bump, patch or wart may need a different medicine, a procedure, monitoring or no treatment. Using it on the wrong lesion can irritate the skin and may delay the right diagnosis.

Have the skin problem assessed before buying or applying imiquimod. If it is prescribed, use only the stated amount and schedule, apply it to the named area, and keep it away from the eyes, lips and broken skin unless directed.

Do not share sachets or containers, combine imiquimod with other active creams, or increase applications because the lesion looks unchanged. Record the product name and tell the clinician about allergies, immune conditions, pregnancy, breastfeeding and medicines that affect the skin.

Arrange medical review for a changing, bleeding, persistently sore or rapidly growing lesion rather than trying an over-the-counter remedy. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread blistering, severe weakness or a rapidly worsening skin reaction after application.

Ask what the lesion is, whether imiquimod is appropriate, how to obtain the correct product, and how to recognise an expected local reaction. Confirm the follow-up plan and what should happen if the lesion does not improve.
