What should you know about imiquimod for keloids?

A keloid is raised scar tissue that extends beyond the original injury and may feel firm, itchy, tender, or tight. Imiquimod alters immune signalling in treated skin, but its role around keloids depends on the scar, its location, skin sensitivity, and previous treatment. It can cause redness, irritation, crusting, or soreness, and applying it to a fresh wound may interfere with healing.

Use imiquimod only when it has been prescribed for your particular scar and follow the application instructions closely. Do not apply it to an open wound, infected skin, or a healing incision unless instructed. Silicone-based scar care, injections, pressure approaches, surgery, or other treatments may be considered depending on the scar. Avoid rubbing or picking the area and protect it from avoidable sun irritation.

Seek assessment if a scar is growing beyond the wound, becomes increasingly painful, ulcerates, bleeds, or develops warmth and discharge. Contact the prescriber for severe irritation, facial or genital swelling, fever, or a reaction that spreads beyond the application area. A rapidly changing lump should be examined rather than treated at home.
